The conversation around digital infrastructure is evolving.
It is no longer simply about building data centres or deploying new technology. It is about creating the right digital foundations to support economic growth, national resilience, cybersecurity, public services and future investment.
For Caribbean nations and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), every major infrastructure investment should maximise long-term national value. Evidence-led decision-making helps ensure investments are aligned with national priorities, economic resilience and sustainable growth.
Rather than asking, “Should we build a data centre?”, governments should first ask:
• What does our country actually need?
• What role can we play within the regional digital economy?
• What constraints exist?
• Can those constraints be overcome?
• What is the lowest-risk pathway to implementation?
The answers will not be the same for every country. Some may benefit from sovereign digital infrastructure, while others may achieve greater value through regional collaboration, enhanced connectivity or a phased approach to digital transformation.
Governments deserve independent, evidence-based advice before making significant infrastructure commitments.
The future of Caribbean digital infrastructure should be built on clarity before capital, evidence before investment, and national outcomes before projects.
If you’re a government, development finance institution, investor or strategic partner interested in shaping the future of digital infrastructure across the Caribbean and SIDS, we’d welcome the opportunity to collaborate.
